1.1 What Is a Laser?

빛을 증폭하는 원자, 분자 또는 이온으로 이루어진 물질이다.
Meaning: 실제 stimulated emission이 발생하여 광학적 gain을 만드는 부분이다.
Pumping
레이저 매질에 외부 에너지를 공급하여 원자를 높은 에너지 상태로 여기시키는 과정이다.
Meaning: 레이저가 동작할 수 있도록 에너지 준위의 population을 변화시킨다.
Optical Feedback
레이저 매질을 통과한 빛을 mirror를 이용하여 다시 매질로 되돌리는 과정이다.
Meaning: 빛이 매질을 반복해서 지나면서 계속 증폭될 수 있게 한다.
3) Population Inversion
Population Inversion
상위 레이저 준위의 population이 하위 준위보다 많은 상태이다.
Meaning: stimulated emission이 absorption보다 우세해지기 위한 핵심 조건이다.
1.2 Atomic Energy Levels and Spontaneous Emission
1) Atomic Energy Levels
Energy Level
원자나 이온이 가질 수 있는 불연속적인 양자역학적 에너지 상태이다.
Meaning: 전자는 임의의 에너지가 아니라 허용된 특정 에너지 준위에 존재한다.
2) Transition Energy
두 에너지 준위 사이의 전이에 해당하는 광자의 에너지는
여기서 는 Planck constant이고 는 radiation frequency이다.
Meaning: 에너지 준위 차이가 방출되거나 흡수되는 빛의 주파수를 결정한다.
3) Optical Pumping
Optical Pumping

Meaning: pump photon의 에너지를 레이저 매질에 전달한다.
4) Spontaneous Emission
Spontaneous Emission
여기된 원자가 외부 신호 없이 낮은 에너지 준위로 전이하며 photon을 방출하는 과정이다.
Meaning: 방출 시점과 방향, 위상이 무작위이므로 일반적으로 incoherent radiation을 만든다.
5) Upper-Level Lifetime
상위 준위의 population은 시간에 따라 감소한다.

1.3 Stimulated Atomic Transitions
1) Absorption
Absorption
낮은 에너지 상태의 원자가 외부 radiation을 흡수하여 높은 에너지 상태로 전이하는 과정이다.
Meaning: photon의 에너지가 원자의 에너지 준위 차이와 일치할 때 강하게 발생한다.
2) Stimulated Absorption
외부 radiation에 의해 lower level의 원자가 upper level로 전이한다.
전이율은 개념적으로
에 비례한다.
Meaning: incident radiation이 lower-state atom을 여기시킨다.
3) Stimulated Emission
Stimulated Emission
외부 radiation이 여기된 원자의 전이를 유도하여 같은 주파수의 radiation을 방출하게 하는 과정이다.

Meaning: 레이저 amplification을 만드는 가장 중요한 과정이다.
4) Coherence of Stimulated Emission
stimulated emission으로 발생하는 radiation은 입력 radiation과 같은 frequency, phase 및 propagation 특성을 갖는다.
Meaning: stimulated emission은 입력 신호를 coherent하게 증폭한다.
5) Net Stimulated Transition
absorption과 stimulated emission을 함께 고려하면 population 변화는

Meaning: population inversion이 laser gain을 만드는 이유이다.
6) Boltzmann Population
열평형 상태에서는
일반적으로

1.4 Laser Amplification
1) Attenuation
population inversion이 없으면 laser medium을 통과하는 radiation은 absorption에 의해 감소할 수 있다.
Meaning: 이면 propagation하면서 optical intensity가 감소한다.
2) Optical Gain
population inversion이 형성되면 absorption보다 stimulated emission이 많아진다.
이 경우

3) Coherent Amplification
stimulated emission으로 추가되는 radiation은 입력 signal과 coherent하다.

1.5 Laser Pumping and Population Inversion
1) Pumping
Pumping
원자를 upper laser level에 축적하기 위해 외부 에너지를 공급하는 과정이다.
대표적인 방법에는 optical pumping, electrical discharge, collision 및 current injection 등이 있다.
Meaning: pumping은 population inversion을 생성하기 위한 에너지원이다.
2) Four-Level Laser
Four-Level Pumping System
원자를 높은 pump level로 여기시킨 후 빠른 relaxation을 통해 upper laser level에 population을 축적하고, laser transition 후 lower laser level의 population을 빠르게 제거하는 구조이다.
Meaning: lower laser level을 거의 비워 둘 수 있어 population inversion을 만들기 쉽다.
3) Condition for Population Inversion
upper laser level에 원자가 충분히 오래 머물고 lower laser level의 population이 빠르게 제거되어야 한다.
개념적으로
Meaning: 상위 준위에는 population이 쌓이고 하위 준위에는 쌓이지 않아야 한다.
1.6 Laser Oscillation and Laser Cavity Modes
1) Laser Oscillation
Laser Oscillation
laser amplification과 optical feedback이 결합되어 외부 입력 없이도 지속적인 coherent radiation이 생성되는 상태이다.
Meaning: amplifier에 feedback을 추가하면 laser oscillator가 된다.
2) Optical Resonator
Optical Resonator
laser medium 양쪽에 mirror를 배치하여 light가 cavity 내부를 반복적으로 왕복하도록 만든 구조이다.
Meaning: 빛이 laser medium을 여러 번 통과하면서 gain을 누적시킨다.
3) Oscillation Threshold
laser oscillation이 시작되려면 round-trip gain이 round-trip loss보다 커야 한다.
steady state에서는
Meaning: gain이 cavity loss를 보상할 수 있어야 레이저가 지속적으로 발진한다.
4) Resonance Condition
standing-wave cavity에서는 cavity 길이에 맞는 특정 frequency만 안정적으로 존재할 수 있다.
Meaning: cavity 안에는 연속적인 모든 주파수가 아니라 특정 resonance frequency만 허용된다.
5) Axial Mode
Axial Mode
laser cavity의 longitudinal direction에서 resonance condition을 만족하는 mode이다.
인접 mode 사이의 frequency spacing은
Meaning: cavity length가 longitudinal mode의 frequency 간격을 결정한다.
6) Transverse Mode
Transverse Mode
beam의 진행 방향에 수직인 단면에서 나타나는 optical field pattern이다.
Meaning: 실제 laser beam의 공간적인 intensity distribution을 결정한다.
7) Stable and Unstable Resonators
Stable Resonator
빛이 여러 번 왕복해도 cavity 내부에 제한되어 유지되는 resonator이다.
Unstable Resonator
일부 빛이 반복 왕복하면서 cavity 밖으로 확장되는 resonator이다.
Meaning: mirror geometry가 laser beam의 spatial mode와 diffraction loss를 결정한다.
1.7 Laser Output-Beam Properties
1) Monochromaticity
Monochromaticity
laser output이 매우 좁은 frequency range에 집중되는 성질이다.
Meaning: 일반적인 thermal light보다 훨씬 좁은 spectral linewidth를 가질 수 있다.
2) Frequency Stability
Frequency Stability
laser oscillation frequency가 시간에 따라 일정하게 유지되는 정도이다.
Meaning: cavity와 laser medium의 변화가 작을수록 안정적인 frequency를 얻을 수 있다.
3) Temporal Coherence
Temporal Coherence
서로 다른 시간에서 측정한 optical field 사이에 일정한 phase 관계가 유지되는 성질이다.
Meaning: narrow linewidth와 밀접하게 관련되어 있다.
4) Spatial Coherence

beam의 서로 다른 공간 위치에서 optical field 사이에 일정한 phase 관계가 유지되는 성질이다.
Meaning: laser beam이 깨끗한 wavefront와 높은 directionality를 가질 수 있게 한다.
5) Beam Collimation
Collimation
laser beam이 propagation하면서 작은 angular spread를 유지하는 성질이다.
diffraction에 의한 최소 angular spread는 대략
Meaning: beam diameter가 크고 wavelength가 짧을수록 divergence를 작게 만들 수 있다.
6) Beam Focusing
lens로 laser beam을 집속하면 focal spot의 크기는 대략
Meaning: laser의 높은 spatial coherence를 이용하면 매우 작은 영역에 빛을 집중할 수 있다.
7) Multimode Oscillation
Multimode Oscillation
하나의 laser에서 여러 axial mode 또는 transverse mode가 동시에 oscillation하는 상태이다.
Meaning: 실제 laser는 항상 이상적인 single-frequency, single-transverse-mode 상태로 동작하는 것은 아니다.

1) Ruby Laser

Cr ion이 포함된 ruby crystal을 laser medium으로 사용하는 solid-state laser이다.
대표적인 laser wavelength는
flashlamp를 이용하여 optical pumping할 수 있다.
Meaning: 최초의 성공적인 laser에 사용된 대표적인 solid-state laser system이다.
2) Solid-State Laser
Solid-State Laser
crystal이나 glass와 같은 solid host 안의 active ion을 laser medium으로 사용하는 laser이다.
Meaning: optical pumping을 통해 높은 optical gain과 다양한 wavelength를 얻을 수 있다.
3) Helium-Neon Laser
He-Ne Laser
helium과 neon gas discharge를 이용하는 gas laser이다.
대표적인 visible laser transition은
Meaning: electrical discharge를 이용해 pumping하는 대표적인 gas laser이다.
1.9 Other Properties of Real Lasers
1) High Optical Power
laser는 작은 beam area에 매우 높은 optical power를 집중할 수 있다.
Meaning: 높은 directionality와 focusing capability를 이용하여 높은 intensity를 만들 수 있다.
2) Spectral Diversity
laser는 ultraviolet, visible, infrared 및 microwave에 가까운 영역까지 매우 다양한 wavelength에서 구현될 수 있다.
Meaning: laser라는 하나의 장치 형태가 특정 wavelength에만 제한되는 것은 아니다.
3) Pumping Methods
laser system에는 optical pumping, electrical discharge, collision, chemical reaction 및 current injection 등 다양한 pumping 방식이 사용된다.
Meaning: laser medium의 특성에 따라 적절한 energy supply mechanism이 달라진다.
4) Efficiency

1) Maser
Maser
Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation의 개념을 이용한 microwave-frequency oscillator 또는 amplifier이다.
1954년에 Charles H. Townes와 공동 연구자들이 ammonia-beam maser를 동작시켰다.
Meaning: laser는 microwave 영역에서 먼저 개발된 maser 개념을 optical frequency로 확장한 것이다.
2) Optical Maser Concept
1958년에 Charles Townes와 Arthur Schawlow가 optical-frequency maser의 가능성을 제시하였다.
Meaning: stimulated emission과 optical resonator를 결합한 현대 laser의 이론적 기반이 마련되었다.
3) First Laser
1960년에 Theodore H. Maiman이 flashlamp-pumped ruby laser를 성공적으로 동작시켰다.
Meaning: 최초로 실험적으로 성공한 optical laser이다.
4) He-Ne Laser
