Forms and Vector Calculus

6.1 Forms on Rn\mathbb{R}^n

1) kk-Form

ω:(Rn)kR.\omega: (\mathbb{R}^n)^k \to \mathbb{R}.

ω(,vi,,vj,)=ω(,vj,,vi,).\omega(\ldots,v_i,\ldots,v_j,\ldots) = - \omega(\ldots,v_j,\ldots,v_i,\ldots).

ω(,v,,v,)=0.\omega(\ldots,v,\ldots,v,\ldots) = 0.

2) 00-Form

00-form은 단순한 real number이다.

00-form field는 function이다.

3) Elementary 11-Forms

dx1,,dxndx_1,\ldots,dx_n

이다.

vector

v=[v1vn]v= \begin{bmatrix} v_1\\ \vdots\\ v_n \end{bmatrix}

dxi(v)=vi.dx_i(v)=v_i.

4) Elementary kk-Forms

기본 kk-forms는

dxi1dxik,i1<<ikdx_{i_1}\wedge\cdots\wedge dx_{i_k}, \qquad i_1<\cdots<i_k

이다.

모든 kk-form은 unique하게

ω=i1<<ikai1ikdxi1dxik\boxed{ \omega = \sum_{i_1<\cdots<i_k} a_{i_1\cdots i_k} dx_{i_1}\wedge\cdots\wedge dx_{i_k} }

5) Wedge Product

Wedge Product: kk-form과 ll-form을 결합하여 (k+l)(k+l)-form을 만드는 연산.

ωη.\omega\wedge\eta.

핵심 properties:

Distributivity

ω(η+μ)=ωη+ωμ.\omega\wedge(\eta+\mu) = \omega\wedge\eta + \omega\wedge\mu.

Associativity

(ωη)μ=ω(ημ).(\omega\wedge\eta)\wedge\mu = \omega\wedge(\eta\wedge\mu).

Skew Commutativity

ω\omegakk-form이고 η\etall-form이면

ωη=(1)klηω\boxed{ \omega\wedge\eta = (-1)^{kl} \eta\wedge\omega }

이다.

특히 11-forms에서는

dxidxj=dxjdxi.dx_i\wedge dx_j = - dx_j\wedge dx_i.

따라서

dxidxi=0.dx_i\wedge dx_i=0.

6) kk-Form Field

ω:UAconstk(Rn).\omega: U \to A^k_{\mathrm{const}}(\mathbb{R}^n).

ω=i1<<ikai1ik(x)dxi1dxik\boxed{ \omega = \sum_{i_1<\cdots<i_k} a_{i_1\cdots i_k}(x) dx_{i_1}\wedge\cdots\wedge dx_{i_k} }

6.2 Integrating Form Fields over Parametrized Domains

1) Parametrized Domain

bounded domain

URkU\subset\mathbb{R}^k

C1C^1 mapping

ϕ:URn\phi:U\to\mathbb{R}^n

2) Integral of a kk-Form

kk-form field ω\omega에 대해

[ϕ(U)]ω=Uωϕ(u)(D1ϕ(u),,Dkϕ(u))dku\boxed{ \int_{[\phi(U)]}\omega = \int_U \omega_{\phi(u)} \left( D_1\phi(u), \ldots, D_k\phi(u) \right) |d^ku| }

3) Dependence on Orientation

Mω=Mω\boxed{ \int_{-M}\omega = - \int_M\omega }

6.3 Orientation of Manifolds

1) Orientation of a Vector Space

ordered basis

(v1,,vk)(v_1,\ldots,v_k)

detP>0.\det P>0.

negative이면 opposite orientation이다.

detP<0.\det P<0.

2) Orientation of a Manifold

Orientation of a Manifold: 각 point xMx\in M에서 tangent space

TxMT_xM

Ωx:B(TxM){+1,1}.\Omega_x: B(T_xM)\to\{+1,-1\}.

3) Oriented Curve

4) Oriented Surface

surface SR3S\subset\mathbb{R}^3에서는 continuous nonzero normal vector field

n(x)n(x)

5) Orientability

6.4 Integrating Forms over Oriented Manifolds

1) Orientation-Preserving Linear Transformation

T:RkVT:\mathbb{R}^k\to V

T(e1),,T(ek)T(e_1),\ldots,T(e_k)

VV의 positive basis여야 한다.

2) Orientation-Preserving Parametrization

parametrization

ϕ:UM\phi:U\to M

가 orientation preserving이라는 것은

Dϕ(u)D\phi(u)

3) Integral over an Oriented Manifold

orientation-preserving parametrization ϕ\phi를 사용하면

Mω=Uωϕ(u)(D1ϕ(u),,Dkϕ(u))dku\boxed{ \int_M\omega = \int_U \omega_{\phi(u)} \left( D_1\phi(u), \ldots, D_k\phi(u) \right) |d^ku| }

6.5 Forms in the Language of Vector Calculus

1) 00-Form

00-form field는 function이다.

f:R3R.f:\mathbb{R}^3\to\mathbb{R}.

2) Work Form

vector field

F=[F1F2F3]F= \begin{bmatrix} F_1\\ F_2\\ F_3 \end{bmatrix}

Work Form

WF=F1dx+F2dy+F3dz\boxed{ W_F = F_1\,dx + F_2\,dy + F_3\,dz }

이다.

vector vv에 대해

WF(v)=Fv.W_F(v)=F\cdot v.

Meaning: vector field가 displacement 방향으로 하는 work를 측정한다.

curve CC에서는

CWF\int_CW_F

가 vector field의 line integral이다.

3) Flux Form

vector field FFFlux Form

ΦF=F1dydzF2dxdz+F3dxdy\boxed{ \Phi_F = F_1\,dy\wedge dz - F_2\,dx\wedge dz + F_3\,dx\wedge dy }

이다.

또는

ΦF=F1dydz+F2dzdx+F3dxdy.\Phi_F = F_1\,dy\wedge dz + F_2\,dz\wedge dx + F_3\,dx\wedge dy.

ΦF(v1,,vn1)=det[F,v1,,vn1].\Phi_F(v_1,\ldots,v_{n-1}) = \det[F,v_1,\ldots,v_{n-1}].

4) Mass Form

function ff에 대응하는 Mass Form

Mf=fdxdydz\boxed{ M_f = f\,dx\wedge dy\wedge dz }

5) Forms and Vector Calculus in R3\mathbb{R}^3

FormVector Calculus Interpretation0-formfunction1-formvector field via work2-formvector field via flux3-formfunction via mass\begin{array}{c|c} \text{Form} & \text{Vector Calculus Interpretation}\\ \hline 0\text{-form} & \text{function}\\ 1\text{-form} & \text{vector field via work}\\ 2\text{-form} & \text{vector field via flux}\\ 3\text{-form} & \text{function via mass} \end{array}

6.6 Boundary Orientation

1) Piece-with-Boundary

  • interval의 boundary: endpoints
  • surface patch의 boundary: curves
  • solid region의 boundary: surfaces

2) Outward Vector

xXx\in\partial X에서

voutv_{\mathrm{out}}

3) Boundary Orientation

(vout,v1,,vk1)\boxed{ (v_{\mathrm{out}},v_1,\ldots,v_{k-1}) }

XX의 positive orientation이면

(v1,,vk1)(v_1,\ldots,v_{k-1})

4) Surface in R3\mathbb{R}^3

5) Solid Region in R3\mathbb{R}^3

standard orientation을 가진 solid region의 boundary orientation은 outward-pointing normal에 해당한다.

6.7 The Exterior Derivative

1) Exterior Derivative

Exterior derivative는 kk-form field를 (k+1)(k+1)-form field로 바꾸는 operation이다.

d:Ak(U)Ak+1(U)\boxed{ d: A^k(U) \to A^{k+1}(U) }

2) Exterior Derivative of a Function

00-form ff

df=i=1nDifdxi\boxed{ df = \sum_{i=1}^{n} D_if\,dx_i }

이다.

이는 기존 derivative

DfDf

3) Coordinate Formula

ω=IaI(x)dxI\omega = \sum_I a_I(x)\,dx_I

이면

dω=IdaIdxI\boxed{ d\omega = \sum_I da_I\wedge dx_I }

이다.

여기서

dxI=dxi1dxik.dx_I = dx_{i_1}\wedge\cdots\wedge dx_{i_k}.

4) Constant Forms

constant form ω\omega에 대해서는

dω=0.d\omega=0.

특히

d(dxi)=0.d(dx_i)=0.

5) Boundary of a Boundary

d(dω)=0\boxed{ d(d\omega)=0 }

이다.

즉,

d2=0\boxed{ d^2=0 }

이다.

Meaning: 이는 geometric하게

(X)=0\partial(\partial X)=0

즉, "boundary of a boundary is zero"라는 사실과 연결된다.

6) Exterior Derivative of a Wedge Product

ω\omegakk-form이면

d(ωη)=dωη+(1)kωdη\boxed{ d(\omega\wedge\eta) = d\omega\wedge\eta + (-1)^k \omega\wedge d\eta }

이다.

ordinary product rule의 differential-form version이다.

6.8 Grad, Curl, Div, and All That

1) Gradient

function ff에 대해

f=[D1fD2fD3f].\nabla f = \begin{bmatrix} D_1f\\ D_2f\\ D_3f \end{bmatrix}.

forms에서는

df=Wf\boxed{ df=W_{\nabla f} }

이다.

Meaning: gradient는 function의 exterior derivative를 vector field로 해석한 것이다.

2) Geometric Meaning of Gradient

level surface

f(x)=cf(x)=c

에서

f(x)\nabla f(x)

3) Curl

vector field

F=[F1F2F3]F= \begin{bmatrix} F_1\\ F_2\\ F_3 \end{bmatrix}

의 curl은

curlF=×F=[D2F3D3F2D3F1D1F3D1F2D2F1]\boxed{ \operatorname{curl}F = \nabla\times F = \begin{bmatrix} D_2F_3-D_3F_2\\ D_3F_1-D_1F_3\\ D_1F_2-D_2F_1 \end{bmatrix} }

이다.

forms에서는

dWF=ΦcurlF\boxed{ dW_F = \Phi_{\operatorname{curl}F} }

이다.

Meaning: curl은 vector field의 local rotation을 측정한다.

4) Divergence

divF=F=D1F1+D2F2+D3F3\boxed{ \operatorname{div}F = \nabla\cdot F = D_1F_1+D_2F_2+D_3F_3 }

이다.

forms에서는

dΦF=MdivF\boxed{ d\Phi_F = M_{\operatorname{div}F} }

5) d2=0d^2=0 and Vector Identities

d(df)=0d(df)=0

에서

curl(f)=0\boxed{ \operatorname{curl}(\nabla f)=0 }

또한

d(dWF)=0d(dW_F)=0

에서

div(curlF)=0\boxed{ \operatorname{div}(\operatorname{curl}F)=0 }

d2=0\boxed{ d^2=0 }

6.9 The Pullback

1) Pullback by a Linear Transformation

linear transformation

T:VWT:V\to W

kk-form ω\omega on WW에 대해 pullback은

TωT^*\omega

이고

(Tω)(v1,,vk)=ω(Tv1,,Tvk)\boxed{ (T^*\omega)(v_1,\ldots,v_k) = \omega(Tv_1,\ldots,Tv_k) }

이다.

2) Pullback by a Smooth Map

smooth mapping

f:UVf:U\to V

(fω)x(v1,,vk)=ωf(x)(Df(x)v1,,Df(x)vk)\boxed{ (f^*\omega)_x(v_1,\ldots,v_k) = \omega_{f(x)} \left( Df(x)v_1,\ldots,Df(x)v_k \right) }

3) Basic Coordinate Example

y=f(x)y=f(x)

이면

f(dy)=df\boxed{ f^*(dy) = df }

이다.

이는 elementary calculus에서

dy=f(x)dxdy=f'(x)dx

4) Pullback and Wedge Product

f(ωη)=fωfη\boxed{ f^*(\omega\wedge\eta) = f^*\omega \wedge f^*\eta }

이다.

5) Pullback and Exterior Derivative

가장 중요한 relation은

d(fω)=f(dω)\boxed{ d(f^*\omega) = f^*(d\omega) }

6) Pullback and Integration

ϕ(U)ω=Uϕω\boxed{ \int_{\phi(U)}\omega = \int_U\phi^*\omega }

Pullback은 change of variables의 자연스러운 differential-form version이다.

6.10 The Generalized Stokes's Theorem

1) Fundamental Theorem of Calculus

ordinary calculus에서

abf(x)dx=f(b)f(a)\int_a^bf'(x)\,dx = f(b)-f(a)

이다.

forms로 쓰면

[a,b]df=[a,b]f\boxed{ \int_{[a,b]}df = \int_{\partial[a,b]}f }

이다.

2) Generalized Stokes's Theorem

XX가 oriented kk-dimensional piece-with-boundary이고 ω\omega(k1)(k-1)-form이면

Xω=Xdω\boxed{ \int_{\partial X}\omega = \int_Xd\omega }

3) Local to Global

Exterior derivative

dωd\omega

는 local information을 나타내고

Xω\int_{\partial X}\omega

Stokes's theorem

6.11 The Integral Theorems of Vector Calculus

1) Fundamental Theorem for Line Integrals

F=fF=\nabla f

CFdr=f(b)f(a)\boxed{ \int_CF\cdot dr = f(b)-f(a) }

이다.

Meaning: gradient field에서 work는 path가 아니라 endpoints에만 의존한다.

2) Green's Theorem

plane region XX와 positively oriented boundary X\partial X에 대해

XPdx+Qdy=X(D1QD2P)dxdy\boxed{ \oint_{\partial X} P\,dx+Q\,dy = \iint_X \left( D_1Q-D_2P \right) dx\,dy }

이다.

3) Stokes's Theorem in R3\mathbb{R}^3

oriented surface SS와 boundary S\partial S에 대해

SFdr=S(curlF)NdA\boxed{ \oint_{\partial S} F\cdot dr = \iint_S (\operatorname{curl}F)\cdot N\,dA }

이다.

forms에서는 단순히

SWF=SdWF.\int_{\partial S}W_F = \int_SdW_F.

4) Divergence Theorem

bounded region XR3X\subset\mathbb{R}^3의 boundary가 outward orientation을 가지면

XdivFdV=XFNdA\boxed{ \iiint_X \operatorname{div}F\,dV = \iint_{\partial X} F\cdot N\,dA }

이다.

forms에서는

XdΦF=XΦF\boxed{ \int_Xd\Phi_F = \int_{\partial X}\Phi_F }

이다.

5) One Underlying Theorem

Xω=Xdω\boxed{ \int_{\partial X}\omega = \int_Xd\omega }

의 special case이다.

6.12 Electromagnetism

1) Lorentz Force

electric field EE, magnetic field BB, charge qq, velocity vv에 대해 cgs units에서는

F=q(E+vc×B)\boxed{ F = q \left( E+ \frac{v}{c}\times B \right) }

이다.

2) Maxwell's Equations

책의 cgs notation에서는

1cDtB=curlE-\frac{1}{c}D_tB = \operatorname{curl}E divB=0\operatorname{div}B = 0 1cDtE=curlB4πcj\frac{1}{c}D_tE = \operatorname{curl}B - \frac{4\pi}{c}j divE=4πρ.\operatorname{div}E = 4\pi\rho.

3) Electromagnetic Field as a Form

R4\mathbb{R}^4

4) Maxwell's Equations in Forms

dF=0\boxed{ dF=0 }

dM=4πJ\boxed{ dM=4\pi J }

5) Conservation of Charge

charge density ρ\rho와 current density jj는 conservation law를 만족한다.

vector notation에서는

Dtρ+divj=0\boxed{ D_t\rho+\operatorname{div}j=0 }

6) Electromagnetic Waves

6.13 Potentials

1) Exact Form

kk-form ω\omega가 어떤 (k1)(k-1)-form η\eta에 대해

ω=dη\boxed{ \omega=d\eta }

2) Closed Form

dω=0\boxed{ d\omega=0 }

3) Exact Implies Closed

ω=dη\omega=d\eta

이면

dω=d(dη)=0.d\omega = d(d\eta) = 0.

따라서

exactclosed\boxed{ \text{exact} \Rightarrow \text{closed} }

이다.

이는

d2=0d^2=0

4) Convex Domain

UU가 convex라는 것은 모든 x,yUx,y\in U에 대해 두 points를 잇는 line segment가 UU 안에 있다는 뜻이다.

5) Star-Shaped Domain

어떤 fixed point x0Ux_0\in U가 존재하여 모든 xUx\in U에 대해

[x0,x]U[x_0,x]\subset U

이면 UU는 star-shaped이다.

모든 convex domain은 star-shaped이다.

6) Poincare's Lemma

UU가 open하고 star-shaped이면

dω=0    ω=dη\boxed{ d\omega=0 \iff \omega=d\eta }

이다.

즉,

closed    exact\boxed{ \text{closed} \iff \text{exact} }

on star-shaped domains.

7) Potential Function

R3\mathbb{R}^3의 vector field FF에 대해

F=fF=\nabla f

curlF=0    F=f\boxed{ \operatorname{curl}F=0 \iff F=\nabla f }

8) Path Independence

F=fF=\nabla f

이면

CFdr\int_CF\cdot dr

CFdr=f(b)f(a)\boxed{ \int_C F\cdot dr = f(b)-f(a) }

9) Cone Operator

c:Ak(U)Ak1(U)c: A^k(U) \to A^{k-1}(U)

dω=0d\omega=0

이면

d(cω)=ω\boxed{ d(c\omega)=\omega }

Meaning: cone operator는 closed form의 potential을 만드는 constructive tool이다.
